Josephine Langford spent five years playing a character critics refused to take seriously. The After franchise scored between zero and eighteen percent with reviewers across its first four films and earned $169 million at the box office anyway — most of it outside the United States, most of it from audiences who gave Tessa Young a 93 percent approval rating while critics were writing her off. Langford was 21 when the first film opened. She was 25 when she negotiated her way out of the fifth. That gap tells you something about how she reads her own situation.

She was born on 18 August 1997 in Perth, Western Australia, the younger daughter of Stephen Langford, director of medical services for the Royal Flying Doctor Service Western Operations, and Elizabeth Green, a pediatrician. The family lived in Applecross, a quiet suburb on the Swan River. Josephine started saxophone at eight, won a song composition award at ten with a piece she wrote herself called “Shadows,” and was in acting classes by thirteen — not because she watched someone else do it but because she wanted to try it. She trained for five years at the Ali Roberts Studio in Leederville and attended the Perth Film School, graduating from All Saints’ College. Her older sister Katherine Langford had the same instinct and made the same decision independently; they each found their own way to the industry without coordinating it.

The first professional credits were Australian short films in 2013 and 2014, built on local auditions while she was still in secondary school. In 2017 she joined the cast of Wolf Creek Season 2 as Emma Webber, her television debut, before relocating for American productions. Wish Upon (2017), a supernatural horror opposite Joey King, was the first theatrical Hollywood credit. The following two years brought smaller projects and a self-tape for a novel adaptation that had been in development for years with a dedicated online following.

That self-tape became After. Directed by Jenny Gage and released in April 2019, the film opened to 18 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and $69.5 million worldwide. Langford won the Teen Choice Award for Choice Drama Movie Actress. After We Collided followed in 2020 — critics at 13 percent, audiences at 93 percent, $48 million globally despite a compressed theatrical window. Two more sequels arrived in 2021 and 2022, the critical floor reaching zero percent for After Ever Happy. The fifth film, After Everything (2023), marked a structural change: Langford reduced her role to approximately fifteen minutes of screen time, and the film, with its altered focus, became the one entry the critics actually liked, at 81 percent — the franchise-low grosser at $10.6 million.

Running in parallel to the franchise was a body of work the algorithm rarely surfaced. Into the Dark: They Come Knocking (2019, Blumhouse/Hulu), Amy Poehler’s Moxie (2021, Netflix) in a supporting role opposite Hadley Robinson, and Gigi & Nate (2022) were made between After sequels. The clearest statement arrived in 2023: The Other Zoey, a romantic comedy she led for Amazon Prime Video, landed at 87 percent with critics — the best notice she had ever received in a standalone lead. The film went largely unnoticed outside streaming, but the rating existed.

What the criticism of the franchise obscured was the nature of the criticism. Reviewers who covered the After series consistently singled out the structural problems — the source material, the script dynamics, the editing — while noting that Langford was doing what the role permitted. Screen Rant’s recurring coverage described her as doing “admirable work with what little they’re given.” The franchise was not the kind of film that survives on performance alone, and it was not designed to be. It was designed to move a very large international audience that found it exactly where it wanted to be found.

In 2024, Beyond After, a documentary examining the franchise’s cultural life, arrived on Prime Video with Langford appearing as herself. Around the same time she deleted her Instagram account, which had carried approximately 3.8 million followers. She had said in 2019 that her brain “does not work with social media” — that she was an overthinker, too private for the format. The deletion was not a statement; it was consistent with what she had already said. The spin-off After: Next Generation was announced in 2026 without her involvement. Confirmed: she is not returning.

She is 28. She has said she wants to play a complicated villain. She has said she is hungry for science fiction, action, dark comedy. The Other Zoey and Moxie and the exit from the fifth After film are the visible evidence that she has been making selections for a while, even when the franchise made that hard to read from the outside. The next selection has not been announced.
